Babylonian Government
The New Empire government of Babylon adopted a lot of the Assyrian imperial practices. Babylon was run by a king who was in charge overall. The king also had power over religious rituals. Governers overlooked important provinces on the kings order. Local people were often put in place to rule local kingdoms. Sometimes this lead to revolt, as in the case of Jerusalem. They have had many different kings throughout history. Babylon's most famous king was Hammurabi. He made a lot of changes to their civilization over time. He led Babylon with a centralized government known as a bureaucracy. They also had taxation to keep civilization running smoothly.
Law and Justice
Shamash was their God of law and justice. A wittness of a crime had to take an oath before his serious crimes were to be punishable by drowning or burning. Hammurabi's Code contained about 250 laws. One of the most famous laws was; "lex talionis" or an eye for an eye.
